Spearfishing (use of a spear gun or fishing gun) is legal in Saint Lucia's fishery waters but tightly regulated. Under Regulation 44 of the Fisheries Regulations 1994, no one may use a spear gun for fishing without first obtaining written permission (a spear gun permit) from the Chief Fisheries Officer, subject to any conditions imposed. Spear guns may NOT be used while diving with SCUBA or Hookah gear, and are completely prohibited inside any Marine Reserve. Sport (recreational) fishing under a sportsfishing licence is restricted to angling and does not authorise spearing unless the licence specifically permits it. Speared lobster is banned outright, and closed seasons apply to lobster, turtle, conch and sea urchins. The spear gun permit costs EC$25.00 and is issued by the Department of Fisheries.

Uvjeti
- Obtain a spear gun permit / written permission from the Chief Fisheries Officer before spearfishing (same requirement as residents).
- Comply with all closed seasons, size limits, gear restrictions and marine reserve prohibitions.
Ograničenja
- No spearfishing inside Marine Reserves (e.g. SMMA no-take zones).
- No use of SCUBA/Hookah while spearfishing.
- Foreign-flagged vessels engaging in sportsfishing must obtain a sportsfishing licence (Reg. 26) and follow sportsfishing rules.
The official spear gun permit portal does not distinguish residents from non-residents; tourists are generally expected to spearfish only through licensed operators and must still hold permission. Visitors should confirm current requirements with the Department of Fisheries before spearfishing.
Rezidenti
Spear Gun Permit (written permission from the Chief Fisheries Officer); local fishers may also register and hold fishing/sportsfishing licences.
Uvjeti
- Apply to the Chief Fisheries Officer for spear gun permission (Reg. 44(1)).
- Use breath-hold diving only (no SCUBA/Hookah for fishing).

The SMMA, declared in 1995, contains designated Marine Reserves (no-take zones such as the Anse Chastanet reserve) where all fishing is closed. Use of a spear gun for fishing is prohibited in any Marine Reserve (Regulation 44(5)), and a marine reserve may not be used for recreational purposes without written permission (Regulation 46).

- All declared Marine Reserves under the Fisheries Actmarine reserve
Spear gun fishing is prohibited in any Marine Reserve declared by the Minister under Section 22 of the Fisheries Act. Napomene istraživača
Spearfishing in Saint Lucia is legal but restricted: a written spear gun permit (EC$25.00) from the Chief Fisheries Officer is mandatory (Reg. 44), spear guns cannot be used with SCUBA/Hookah gear (breath-hold only), and they are banned in Marine Reserves (e.g. SMMA no-take zones). Lobster may never be speared. Closed seasons apply to lobster (30 Apr-1 Sep), turtle (28 Feb-1 Oct) and sea urchins (30 Nov-1 Sep); conch closed season is set by Gazette notice. Verbatim law text was extracted via OCR from the official NATLEX/ILO PDF of the Fisheries Regulations 1994 (S.I. No. 9 of 1994), made under the Fisheries Act 1984 (No. 10 of 1984), now Cap. 7.15. The Attorney General Chambers and Ministry of Agriculture sites host the parent Fisheries Act. Coordinates given for the SMMA use the Soufriere town location as an anchor; precise reserve boundary coordinates were not published on the sources reviewed and are not fabricated. The Fisheries Regulations 1994 'Application' clause (Reg. 3) addresses vessels beyond three miles; the spear gun and species-protection provisions apply throughout the fishery waters.
