Recreational marine spearfishing (pesca/caza submarina) is practiced legally along Argentina's Atlantic coast and is a recognised competitive sport governed by the Federacion Argentina de Actividades Subacuaticas (FAAS, CMAS member). Provincial marine park created 1974 (Provincial Law 1238/74) in Golfo San José, Chubut, within the Península Valdés UNESCO World Heritage area. Protects a southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) reproduction zone. Extractive spearfishing within this protected marine park is incompatible with its conservation regime.
