Under reg 69 of the Fisheries (Amateur Fishing) Regulations 2013 spear was historically one of the few permitted methods, but rule changes now make this a no-take marine protection area: marine life may no longer be taken (except kina daily bag limits and customary take by permit), so spearfishing is now banned.
