One of Myanmar's first Locally Managed Marine Areas, gazetted 31 March 2017 in the northern Myeik (Mergui) Archipelago around Thayawthadangyi Island. The LMMA includes permanent and seasonal no-take zones for the most important coral reefs, which serve as nursery grounds; exclusive fishing rights are granted to the local fishing community, and extractive fishing (including spearfishing by outsiders) is excluded in the no-take zones.
