Spearfishing is permitted in Grenada but tightly restricted. Spear guns may only be used by Grenadian citizens; a non-citizen (foreigner) may not use a spear gun in the fishery waters except with the written permission of the Chief Fisheries Officer (Fisheries (Amendment) Regulations 1996, reg. 25(1)). Using a spear gun while on SCUBA or Hookah (surface-supplied) equipment is prohibited for everyone (reg. 25(2)). Spear guns are also banned outright inside all four declared Marine Protected Areas, where taking any animal or plant and fishing from shore or vessel is prohibited (Fisheries (Marine Protected Areas) Regulations, SRO 78 of 2001, reg. 6). Annual closed seasons (set by Ministerial notice) protect lobster, turtle, sea urchin and conch, during which they may not be taken by any method including spearing. Protected/undersized lobster, immature conch and turtles must not be taken. Breaches carry a fine up to EC$5,000 and/or up to 2 years imprisonment.

Cyfyngiadau

  • Spear guns may only be used by citizens of Grenada; non-citizens need written permission from the Chief Fisheries Officer (reg. 25(1)).
  • No person may use a spear gun for fishing while using SCUBA or Hookah equipment (reg. 25(2)) — spearfishing is effectively free-dive / breath-hold only.
  • Spear guns are prohibited inside all Marine Protected Areas; possession or use of a spear gun in an MPA is an offence (SRO 78 of 2001, reg. 6(2)).
  • Lobster may only be captured by hand, loop, trap or pot — not by spear (reg. 16(3)).
  • Coral may not be taken/collected without written permission of the Chief Fisheries Officer.

SCUBA/Hookah equipment may only be used in fishery waters by registered commercial divers or under supervision of a licenced operator (reg. 23(3)); combining a spear gun with such equipment is banned for everyone, so legal spearfishing is by breath-hold diving only.

Cyfyngiadau

  • Without that permission, spearfishing by non-citizens/visitors is prohibited.
  • Spear guns are prohibited in all Marine Protected Areas regardless of nationality.
  • No spear gun may be combined with SCUBA/Hookah.

In practice visitors are widely advised not to bring or use spear guns, as use by non-citizens without the Chief Fisheries Officer's permission is an offence carrying a fine up to EC$5,000 and/or up to 2 years imprisonment. Grenada's fisheries legislation was further strengthened by the Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2025 (passed 19 Nov 2025).

Preswylwyr

No dedicated recreational spearfishing licence; citizens may use a spear gun in fishery waters subject to general conservation rules.

Gofynion

  • Comply with closed seasons, protected-species and size limits.
  • No spear gun use with SCUBA/Hookah.
  • No spear guns inside Marine Protected Areas.

Manteision

  • Grenadian citizens may use a spear gun without prior Chief Fisheries Officer permission (unlike non-citizens).

The spear-gun nationality restriction (reg. 25(1)) distinguishes citizens of Grenada (permitted) from non-citizens (permission required).

Nodiadau'r ymchwilydd

Verbatim legal text for spear guns (reg. 25), SCUBA/Hookah (reg. 23), lobster (reg. 16), conch (reg. 18) and penalties (reg. 29) is taken from the official Fisheries (Amendment) Regulations 1996 (SRO 24 of 1996) made under the Fisheries Act Cap. 108, retrieved from FAOLEX (grn6904.pdf) and extracted via pdftotext. Marine Protected Area prohibitions (reg. 6, reg. 8) are from the official Fisheries (Marine Protected Areas) Regulations SRO 78 of 2001 (FAOLEX grn129303.pdf). Key points for spearfishing: (1) spear guns are restricted to Grenadian citizens — non-citizens need Chief Fisheries Officer permission; (2) spear guns cannot be combined with SCUBA/Hookah, so legal spearfishing is breath-hold only; (3) spear guns are banned in all four declared MPAs (Moliniere-Beausejour, Woburn/Clarkes Court Bay, Sandy Island/Oyster Bed, Grand Anse); (4) species closed seasons and size limits apply. Closed-season dates are set annually by Ministerial notice; the 2025 dates (lobster 1 May–31 Aug; turtle and sea urchin 1 Apr–31 Aug) are recorded with a secondary source reporting the Ministry notice. MPA coordinates are approximate centroids from mapping/secondary sources, not from the legal text. License cost/validity and exact conch closed-season dates were not found in official sources and are marked unknown. Legislation was further strengthened by the Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2025 (passed by the House of Representatives on 19 Nov 2025); the consolidated amended text was not yet retrievable in full.
