Point Samson closure — spearfishing for bony fish permitted (Western Australia)

The waters off Point Samson in the Pilbara, between the disused Point Samson jetty and a line running north-west to 20°36.277'S 117°11.589'E, are closed to commercial fishing and to recreational fishing generally by the Prohibition on Fishing (Point Samson) Order (No. 2) 2006 (Order No. 4 of 2006, s.43 Fish Resources Management Act 1994, Government Gazette No. 130 of 28 July 2006) — but clause 4(3) expressly exempts 'a person fishing for fish of the Class Osteichthyes by means of a pointed instrument', so breath-hold or dive spearfishing for bony fish is lawful here even though almost nothing else is. Clause 2 defines a pointed instrument as a speargun, harpoon, gidgie, Hawaiian sling or other similar pointed instrument. The permission does not extend to sharks or rays (Class Chondrichthyes) or to any invertebrate — those remain inside the clause 4(1) closure — and the only other permitted method is finfish on a rod, reel and line or a hand-held line (clause 4(2)). Ordinary statewide size, bag and protected-species rules still apply.
