West End Demersal Protected Area, Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) (Western Australia)

A statutory no-fishing area at Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) covering the waters off the West End of Rottnest Island, the island's most exposed and most heavily dived ground. Clause 3(1) of the Prohibition on Fishing (Rottnest Island) Order 2007 (Order No. 4 of 2007, made under s.43 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994) provides that a person must not fish by any means in a protected area, and the five protected areas are those in Schedules 1 to 5 of the order. Schedule 1 restores two things only: rod-and-line or hand-held line fishing from the shore or reef top on a short named stretch, and trolling from a boat for pelagic species. Neither reaches a speargun. Spearfishing is therefore prohibited throughout this area. This is a stricter rule than the island-wide one: the order separately bans the use of a pointed instrument in the inshore band described in Schedule 8, but here all fishing is banned.
