Anacapa Island Special Closure - brown pelican fledgling area (California), closed 1 January to 31 October

Seasonal no-entry area on the north side of West Anacapa Island (Channel Islands). 14 CCR 632(b)(111)(B) designates a brown pelican fledgling area from the mean high tide mark seaward to a water depth of 20 fathoms (120 feet), between due-north lines off Portuguese Rock and the western edge of Frenchy's Cove — a distance the regulation itself gives as “approximately 4,000 feet” of shoreline, the two due-north lines being 1,015 m apart measured east-west — and provides that no person except CDFW or National Park Service staff on duty may enter it from 1 January to 31 October. For ten months of the year, therefore, spearfishing anywhere in that band is unlawful; the closure sits inside the wider Anacapa Island Special Closure, whose other limb (632(b)(111)(A)) bans only nets and traps in water less than 20 feet deep and does not by itself restrict spearfishing. Anacapa Island SMR/SMCA rules apply in addition.
