Barker Inlet—St Kilda Aquatic Reserve, South Australia

Aquatic reserve constituted under section 4 of the Fisheries Management Act 2007 (SA), covering the waters of Barker Inlet east of the Grand Trunkway road bridge and downstream to the St Kilda channel. Section 76 of the Act makes it an offence to engage in any fishing activity in an aquatic reserve except as authorised by the regulations, and regulation 4(b)(i) of the Fisheries Management (Aquatic Reserves) Regulations 2016 authorises only two things here: taking fish with a rod and line or hand line, and taking bloodworms for bait with a hand net. Spearfishing is a fishing activity within the Act's definition and is not in that exhaustive list, so it is prohibited throughout the reserve. Entry, boating, swimming and diving remain lawful under regulation 4(a)(i) — it is the taking of fish by spear that is unavailable. The reserve is a mangrove and tidal-creek nursery inside the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary; the mapped point sits in the open water of the outer inlet.
