North Muiron Conservation Area, Muiron Islands Marine Management Area (Western Australia)

A no-fishing conservation area of the Muiron Islands Marine Management Area, about 15 km north-east of North West Cape, covering the waters around North Muiron Island, the northern of the two main Muiron Islands. Clause 3 of the Prohibition on Recreational Fishing (Muiron Islands Marine Management Area) Order 2008 (Order No. 10 of 2008, s.43 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994) provides that a person must not engage in recreational fishing by any means in the waters of a Conservation Area, so spearfishing is prohibited. DPIRD's own spearfishing guidance for the area states the position plainly: “No spearfishing in conservation areas. Spearfishing for wrasse and cods/groper and spearfishing using compressed air are permitted outside conservation areas.” The Muiron Islands are not part of Ningaloo Marine Park, and the Ningaloo species and compressed-air restrictions do not apply here.
