Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) island waters, Western Australia

Spearfishing is prohibited in a band of water around the whole of Rottnest Island (Wadjemup), but the band is not unlimited: clause 6 of the Prohibition on Fishing (Rottnest Island) Order 2007 bans the use of a pointed instrument only in the waters of Schedule 8, which are (a) the band extending 800 m seaward of the high water mark from Point Clune round the eastern end of the island to Salmon Point, (b) the band extending 200 m seaward of the high water mark on the remaining, western stretch between Salmon Point and Point Clune, and (c) all water within 200 m of the high water mark of Dyer Island. Beyond those distances the order does not prohibit spearfishing. Separately, clause 3(1) closes five protected areas to all fishing by any means — West End Demersal, Green Island, Armstrong, Parker Point and Kingston Reef — subject only to narrow rod-and-line and trolling permissions in Schedules 1 to 3. Within 800 m of Rottnest and 200 m of Dyer Island it is also an offence to net (cl. 4) or to take any molluscs, echinoderms, corals, sea anemones, jellyfish, seahorses, sea dragons or pipefish (cl. 5 and Schedule 7).
