Conservation Area around the Um El Faroud wreck (Wied iż-Żurrieq)

Conservation Area set by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture around the Um El Faroud wreck off Wied iż-Żurrieq on Malta's south coast. Spear fishing is prohibited here, as are set bottom lines, trammel nets, gill nets and entangling nets, encircling nets, and demersal pots and traps. Wied iż-Żurrieq is also one of the five Conservation Areas in which trolling lines (rixa) are banned outright rather than merely conditioned on the Alpha flag. Vessel access is restricted too: only vessels engaged in recreational or technical diving operations may enter or moor inside the area, and then only after pre-notification to Valletta VTS on VHF channel 12.
