Reading Rock State Marine Conservation Area (California)

Humboldt County SMCA surrounding the Reading Rock State Marine Reserve off the Redwood National Park coast (11.96 sq mi). This is NOT a no-take area, and it should not be read as one: 14 CCR §632(b)(6)(B) permits the take of salmon by trolling, true smelt by dip net or Hawaiian type throw net, and Dungeness crab by trap, hoop net or hand, so lawful fishing does happen here. Every one of those exceptions is gear-limited to a method a person in the water cannot use, and 14 CCR §28.90 forbids taking salmon by spear anywhere in California, so the SMCA is closed to spearfishing while remaining open to those other fisheries.
