All rivers, streams, brooks and dams of Western Australia

Spearfishing is prohibited in fresh waters throughout Western Australia. The Prohibition on the Use of Pointed Instruments Notice 1991 (Notice No. 469, made by the Minister for Fisheries under ss 9, 10 and 11 of the Fisheries Act 1905 and published in Government Gazette No. 19 of 1 February 1991) prohibits all persons 'from taking any fish whatsoever by means of spearguns, harpoons, Hawaiian slings, and all other pointed instruments' in the waters of the First Schedule: 'All rivers, streams, brooks, together with their tributaries and effluents and dams within Western Australia.' The single exception is the Second Schedule species, Estuarine Cobbler (Cnidoglanis macrocephalus), which may be taken by handspear. DPIRD still publishes the notice in its consolidated notices and orders and carries it as a section-43 gear-restriction closure (Fisheries Guide GIS layer 185).
