What this zone is
Overview
How spearfishing is treated at Corona de San Carlos (poligono de prohibicion de captura de peces, Resolucion 44/2021 MINAL).
Statutory no-take polygon over the Corona de San Carlos fish-spawning bank off the north coast of Pinar del Rio (Los Colorados shelf, Gulf of Mexico side). Resolucion 44/2021 of the Ministry of the Food Industry (Gaceta Oficial GOC-2021-404-O44) permanently prohibits the capture of fish inside a polygon bounded by 22 50'20"-22 54'35" N and 83 33'56"-83 42'00" W (points 2 and 3 joined along the 200 m isobath); only catch-and-release tourist fishing and official sport-fishing events are excepted, so spearfishing (extractive by definition) is banned. Two adjacent statutory polygons are additionally closed to fish capture every year in January-February and May-June.
