What this zone is

Overview

How spearfishing is treated at Parque Nacional Submarino Monte Cristi.

Underwater national park (Category II, Parque Nacional Submarino, Ley 202-04 numeral 26) — a ~180 km2 marine strip along the Monte Cristi coast from west of El Morro east past Punta Bucan, Punta Salinas, Playa Los Cocos and Punta Juanita out to the 20 m isobath. A separate legal unit from the (terrestrial/coastal) Parque Nacional Monte Cristi already in this record. Under Art. 43 of Law 307-04 any fishing inside protected-area limits requires a Ministry of Environment permit, and Category II permitted uses under Art. 14 of Ley 202-04 (research, education, recreation, ecotourism) do not include fishing; spearfishing is prohibited without such a permit.
