Overview

How spearfishing is treated at Gulf of El Salloum Marine Protected Area.

Egypt's first Mediterranean marine natural reserve (~383 km2), declared by Prime Minister's Decision No. 533 of 2010 in the Gulf of Sallum on the Libyan border, protecting seagrass meadows, rocky reefs, sea turtles, and marine biodiversity under Law No. 102 of 1983.

Fishing licences are granted by the Agency for the Protection and Development of Lakes and Fish Resources (formerly via the General Authority for Fish Resources Development, GAFRD). Spearfishing is not licensed as a recreational activity and is effectively prohibited.
