How spearfishing is treated at Umm Gamar (Umm Qamar) Island.
Isolated coral-fringed island and reef about 9 km north of the Giftun Islands off Hurghada. It is a named constituent of the Red Sea Northern Islands Protectorate, declared in August 2006 under Law No. 102 of 1983 on Natural Protectorates, and a HEPCA-managed no-anchoring/no-take dive reef (Shab Ruhr Umm Gamar). Fishing licences are granted by the Agency for the Protection and Development of Lakes and Fish Resources (formerly via the General Authority for Fish Resources Development, GAFRD). Spearfishing is not licensed as a recreational activity and is effectively prohibited.
