Lake Saimaa is the habitat of the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis). Fishing gear and net restrictions apply in seal areas; spearfishing here is freediving only by local norm. Divers and fishers are urged to avoid disturbing seals.
