How spearfishing is treated at Saimaa ringed seal core distribution area - Pihlajavesi (Lake Saimaa).

Pihlajavesi basin of Lake Saimaa is a core distribution area of the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal. The most dangerous fishing methods are banned year-round in the main seal distribution area and a springtime gillnet closure runs 15 April-30 June. Spearfishing here is freediving-only by local norm and water-owner permission plus the state management fee are required; seal-protection gear restrictions apply.

License requiredvia Metsahallitus (Eraluvat) on behalf of the State; water-area owner / fishery association for local permission

Pay the state fisheries management fee via Metsahallitus Eraluvat (eraluvat.fi), the Erakauppa shops, R-kioski kiosks, or by phone; then obtain the separate permission/permit of the owner of the water area where you intend to spearfish.
