Namena Marine Reserve
What this zone is
Overview
How spearfishing is treated at Namena Marine Reserve.
Fiji's largest no-take marine reserve (60 km2), established 1997 around Namenalala island and its horseshoe-shaped barrier reef in the Koro Sea, Kubulau District, Bua Province (south of Vanua Levu). Fishing was banned entirely in 1997 by the Kubulau community/qoliqoli owners; the area is a full no-take zone managed jointly with dive operators (voluntary dive-tag access for swimming/diving only). All extractive fishing, including spearfishing, is prohibited.
