The waters around Elafonisos island and the Pavlopetri islet (site of the world's oldest submerged Bronze Age town, Vatika Bay, Laconia) are a declared underwater archaeological site (YA YPPOA/GDAPK/DIPKA/TPKACHMAE/497461/329426/12400/4245, FEK AAP 13/2018). In the Elafonisos site spearfishing, towed gear, mechanical shellfish harvesting and sponge fishing are prohibited; at the Pavlopetri islet fishing of EVERY kind is prohibited (Law 3028/2002).
