How spearfishing is treated at Bay Islands National Marine Park - lionfish hunting (Roatan, Utila, Guanaja).
Within the Bay Islands marine protected areas, spearing is prohibited for all species except the invasive lionfish (pez leon). Holders of a Bay Islands Lionfish Spearing License issued by the Roatan Marine Park may legally hunt lionfish only, using a Hawaiian sling or pole spear of up to ~3 feet. Spearguns are not permitted; the permit derives from petitions to the Fisheries Department (DIGEPESCA).
