Overview

How spearfishing is treated at Mesurado Wetlands (Ramsar Site).

Coastal mangrove and lagoon wetland (~6,760 ha) within Monrovia, Montserrado County, connected to the Atlantic via the Mesurado River/lagoon system. Designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar #1631, 2 Feb 2006) and protected for three mangrove species and crocodile/bird habitat; subject of an EPA wetland-protection/restoration programme. Although artisanal fishing for local sale occurs, it is a protected and degraded urban wetland where recreational spearfishing is not appropriate; confirm status with NaFAA/EPA.

Apply to NaFAA. Recreational boat owners are required to visit the NaFAA head office (near LPRC, Freeport of Monrovia) to register and regularize their status; no recreational boat is allowed on the waters without a valid licence.
