How spearfishing is treated at Soufriere Marine Management Area (SMMA) - Marine Reserves / no-take zones.

The SMMA, declared in 1995, contains designated Marine Reserves (no-take zones such as the Anse Chastanet reserve) where all fishing is closed. Use of a spear gun for fishing is prohibited in any Marine Reserve (Regulation 44(5)), and a marine reserve may not be used for recreational purposes without written permission (Regulation 46).

Apply to the Chief Fisheries Officer / Department of Fisheries using the spear gun permit application form (available via the Government of Saint Lucia services portal); processing time 3-5 business days. Permit subject to any conditions the Chief Fisheries Officer specifies.
