Overview

How spearfishing is treated at Ambodivahibe Marine Reserve (Réserve marine d'Ambodivahibe).

Marine and coastal protected reserve (~39,794 ha, terrestrial + marine zones) in far-northern Madagascar, Antsiranana II district, Diana region, about 30 km southeast of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez), part of the Ramena protected-area complex. Established 2015; administered by Conservation International with local communities. As a designated MPA, fishing in no-take zones is restricted/prohibited under Law 2015-053 Art. 89; spearfishing is not permitted in the protected marine reserve.

License requiredvia Ministère de la Pêche et de l'Economie Bleue (Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, MPEB)

Sport/recreational fishing must be covered by a fishing protocol with the Ministry in charge of Fisheries, and the vessel/boat used must hold a fishing licence (Loi 2015-053 Art. 41-42); conditions set by regulation. In practice, operators/divers obtain a spearfishing permit from the local Fisheries office (often arranged by charter operators).
