How spearfishing is treated at Thayawthadangyi Island Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA).

One of Myanmar's first Locally Managed Marine Areas, gazetted 31 March 2017 in the northern Myeik (Mergui) Archipelago around Thayawthadangyi Island. The LMMA includes permanent and seasonal no-take zones for the most important coral reefs, which serve as nursery grounds; exclusive fishing rights are granted to the local fishing community, and extractive fishing (including spearfishing by outsiders) is excluded in the no-take zones.

License requiredvia Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation

Apply to the Officer-in-charge of the Department of Fisheries of the relevant Township/State/Division in the prescribed form (Marine Fisheries Law secs 3-7). For visitors, book through a registered, DoF-licensed tour/liveaboard operator that handles permits and clearances.
