What this zone is

Overview

How spearfishing is treated at Gilutongan (Hilutungan) Marine Sanctuary.

Community-managed no-take fish sanctuary along the western edge of Gilutongan Island (Bgy. Gilutongan, Municipality of Cordova, Cebu), in the Cebu/Olango group. One of the Philippines' best-studied 'urban' MPAs, established by municipal ordinance in 1991 (Cordova Municipal Ordinance No. 008), originally ~10 ha and expanded to ~15 ha in 1999. Inside the sanctuary all fishing is prohibited (no-take); spearfishing is therefore not allowed, reinforced by Sec. 101 of the Fisheries Code (unlawful to fish in declared sanctuaries).
