Overview

How spearfishing is treated at Alataua Marine Protected Area (MSP MPA 9).

One of the nine new fully-protected (no-take) MPAs under Samoa's Marine Spatial Plan 2024-2034. A small offshore MPA (~5 km2) in the Safata district, about 1.92 km seaward of the Sa'anapu/Sataoa mangrove area on the south coast of Upolu; protects fish breeding/nursery habitat linked to the mangroves. All commercial and recreational fishing - including spear-diving tours - is prohibited (no-take). Distinct from the existing Safata MPA and Sa'anapu-Sataoa Mangrove Conservation Area.
