Sa'anapu-Sataoa Mangrove Conservation Area
What this zone is
Overview
How spearfishing is treated at Sa'anapu-Sataoa Mangrove Conservation Area.
Community-managed mangrove and lagoon conservation area on the south coast of Upolu, in the customary ownership of Sa'anapu and Sataoa villages (~75 ha of mangrove forest, considered Samoa's least-degraded wetland and best remaining mangrove ecosystem). The mangroves sustain lagoon fisheries and the conservation area restricts harvest; as a declared village conservation area, destructive fishing and no-take provisions apply under the village fisheries management / Fono bylaw framework. Coordinate is a representative coastal center near Sa'anapu village; not a surveyed boundary.
