Coobowie Aquatic Reserve, South Australia

Aquatic reserve over the waters of Salt Creek Bay at Coobowie, southern Yorke Peninsula. Its boundaries were re-drawn by the Fisheries Management (Aquatic Reserves) Proclamation 2016 and now enclose about 190 hectares. Section 76 of the Fisheries Management Act 2007 (SA) makes any fishing activity in an aquatic reserve an offence unless the regulations authorise it. Regulation 4(b)(ii) of the Fisheries Management (Aquatic Reserves) Regulations 2016 authorises fishing only inside the Coobowie Fishing Zone — the reserve minus the waters of or near Salt Creek Swamp west of the main road causeway — and there only by hand line or rod and line, plus taking bait fish from the shore by any means. Spearfishing is not authorised anywhere in the reserve, and in the swamp waters west of the causeway no fishing at all is authorised. The bay is a recognised nursery for King George whiting and blue swimmer crab.
